When you are depressed things can seem hopeless, you can feel helpless, and it often feels like there is no way out. Depression affects every area of your life, it limits you and keeps you small, and can even make you give up on life. Most depressed people are told to “change the way they think” – but trying to do this consciously when you are suffering from depression is practically an insult. 

No one ever consciously chooses to feel depressed. No one ever consciously chooses to have negative thoughts day in and day out. But you can choose to go deeper, to go beyond the conscious thoughts and feelings to uncover the beliefs that are driving them. This is where hypnotherapy really helps, it allows us to access your subconscious mind to find answers. By  Gaining the insight of why you are really depressed you can begin to unravel the tangled knots of unhelpful thoughts and feelings that are keeping you tied up in depression.

A feeling of being alone and believing that no one really understands what you’re going through can be the hardest part about living with depression. In many areas of Medical and Mental Health the accepted way to deal with  depression is to tell the client that there is something wrong with them biologically (a chemical imbalance), which is affecting them mentally. The offered solution to this is to medicate. Anti-depressants and Anti-anxiety medication is some of the most prescribed medications on the planet, yet the efficacy rate from patient to patient is very inconsistent. Medication works for some people, and not for others. They can also have many side effects. When medication doesn’t work it can leave the sufferer feeling even more hopeless,  and even more helpless, than before. 

There is now, more than ever, a greater understanding of what is really going on when people become depressed. When a person experiences stress, a threat or a feeling of inability to thrive (either real or perceived) the highly intelligent and instinctive human brain will “shut down” or repress our natural drives (motivations) and will place us in a “safe mode”. Unfortunately, for a long time, this misunderstood “safe mode” has been viewed as a damaged state (because of society’s rigid expectations of us), and feeling like we are “damaged” only compounds the low feelings, and causes depression to become a more permanent state than our body intended for healing purposes. Depression can actually be seen as a sign that your body and mind are doing exactly what they should do – protect you from harm.  When we work from within this framework real healing and change can occur.

I work with people who are on medication, as well as those who have decided that medication is not for them. I aim to help my clients find greater hope, resilience, self acceptance and self esteem. I believe these are the pillars of happiness and inner peace.
